Our History

The Mavericks story began in 1998 in North Yorkshire, England, with the founding of Richmond Mavericks FC. Created by two schoolteachers to give local youth a chance to play organized soccer, the club was built on joy, camaraderie, and lifelong friendships—not trophies. That Maverick spirit carried the team across leagues and continents, from England to Europe, Asia, and beyond—proving that soccer’s power to unite is truly global.

“The memories and friendships made on and off the pitch will shine far longer than any medal.”

—Andrew Mollitt, Richmond Mavericks founder

In 2019, that same ethos found new life in Matthews, North Carolina. Frustrated by the rising costs of youth soccer, Mavericks FC was founded to offer competitive and recreational opportunities—for free. Inspired by the belief that soccer should be accessible to all, regardless of background or income, the club challenges the status quo and puts players first.
